Training University Representatives

We returned to UWIC, Cardiff this week to train and re-train 60 undergraduate student academic representatives.

Student Academic Representatives (StARs as they are known at UWIC, Cardiff's Metropolitan University) are students who put themselves forward to be at the forefront of the student body to represent the students on their courses.

Part of their duties are to attend and participate in student liaison committees, course meetings and essentially recognise student issues and raise them on their behalf.

The outdoor experiential training objectives for the StARs were:

  • To understand the principles of effective teamwork
  • Recognise how to make continuous improvement
  • The importance of taking responsibility improve communication skills
  • The importance of planning
  • To liaise and build rapport with individuals and teams.

The students demonstrated their ability to work as teams and problem-solve, they effectively communicated using verbal and non-verbal communication and ultimately learned the importance of planning.

It was a fantastic day and even the wet weather didn’t dampen the enthusiasm and goodwill of these students in their aim to be better representatives.
